Welcome to the Mountain Fiber Folk Cooperative! Members of the Mountain Fiber Folk Cooperative host a unique shop & studio located in picturesque Montgomery Center, Vermont. They provide high quality products made from natural fibers. Our collection of spinning and knitting fibers, handspun (and millspun) yarns are obtained from local: Llamas, Alpacas, Colored Angora goats, Romney, and Cormo sheep, Angora bunnies, and Samoyed dogs!!! Not only can spinners, weavers, knitters, and fiber artists find a vast supply of materials among the hand-dyed locks, handspun yarns, and specially blended roving, but the shop also offers a beautiful collection of locally made gifts such as woven items, needle-felted critters, marvelous fiber dolls, and much more. Come and browse, or sit and knit (or spin) in our cozy corner. The “Folk” are always available to assist with your selection or help with your project.
Who are the Mountain Fiber Folk? Six years ago an eclectic group of “villagers” gathered to learn how to spin on a drop spindle. We had so much fun that monthly meetings evolved (and still happen at the Montgomery Library the first Monday of each month). Several members bought wheels, many more learned to knit, and the group expanded to include others who found joy in working with natural fibers. Our members include local farmers and fiber producers who provide most of the fleeces used in our products. Each skein of hand spun yarn and multi-fiber roving is created with care and is truly a local Vermont item! Our first retail space was a room at Trout River Traders, in Montgomery Center. We then moved to Cottonwood Quilts, just outside of town. When the owner of Cottonwood retired, Mountain Fiber Folk started their own shop and studio 4 years ago, open five days a week, and enlarged its operation, offering classes and a larger array of yarns, books, and patterns.
About the Fibers We use mostly local mohair, wool, alpaca, llama, rabbit, and dog fur. We handspin these fibers alone or in carefully selected blends. Our handspun yarns provide fiber enthusiasts with beautiful varieties from which to choose from the most practical sturdy longwool to the most luxurious baby alpaca and cormo wool blend imaginable!
Looking for a gift? Mountain Fiber Folk Cooperative members continue to create and market a very unique and beautiful selection of high quality finished items as well, made right here in Vermont! Hand-crafted products include woven, knitted and crocheted pieces, marvelous fiber dolls, goat’s milk soap and needle-felted critters! Truly special gifts! Make our shop your destination - located in the charming little town of Montgomery Center!
